Research Units and Laboratories

Research Units & Laboratories at Department of Civil Engineering has well-equipped laboratories for conducting experiments related with regular course works and graduate research. Among these laboratories are:

Center of Excellence in Earthquake Engineering and Vibration

Established in 1986, the Earthquake Engineering and Vibration Research Laboratory at Chulalongkorn University (CU-EVR) is aimed at conducting research related to:

  • Seismic analysis and design of reinforced concrete structures
  • Vulnerability study of buildings in low to moderate seismic zones
  • Cyclic behavior of reinforced concrete components such as columns and shear walls
  • Improvement of ductility of reinforced concrete tied columns
  • Passive and semi-active control of building vibrations under major distant earthquakes
  • Cyclic behavior of soft Bangkok clays

Fire Safety Research Center

The Fire Safety Research Center (FSRC) was originated as the Fire Testing Laboratory at the Department of Civil Engineering in the Faculty of Engineering, Chulalongkorn University. Due to the limitations in terms of the laboratory

space and equipment, the government budget was allocated to renovate the facility within Chulalongkorn University area at Rajamangala Institute of Technology – Uthen Thawai campus in order to establish the Fire Safety Research Center with full capacity in conducting technological advanced research and testing.

FSRC is the first organization in Thailand to serve as the center of information, research activities and testing equipment for fire safety. The center also holds the responsibility of disseminating knowledge in fire safety to the general public.

Material Testing Laboratory

Several testing machines and transducers are available including a 10-ton servo-pulser and universal testing machines with capacities of 20, 40, 100 and 500 tons. These machines are capable of measuring the compressive strength, tensile strength, direct shear strength, torsional strength, bending fatigue, impact and hardness of various kinds of materials including wood, brick, concrete, cast iron, reinforcing steel, structural steel, prestressing wire and tendon. Also, the machines can perform the calibration of construction devices such as hydraulic jack pressure indicators, compression testing machine, tension testing machine, and etc.

Concrete Technology Laboratory

This laboratory is fully equipped with testing machines for measuring the properties of cement, fine and coarse aggregates as well as fresh and hard concrete. The non-destructive testing equipment for concrete construction and inspection are also available.

Soil Mechanics Laboratory

The laboratory is equipped with several state-of-art oil and rock testing machines. Standard soil tastings include index property determinations (Atterberg limit, grain size analysis, specific gravity), strength tests (direct shear test, triaxial test) and consolidation test. Advanced equipments include the stress-path triaxial test device, the constant rate of strain (CRS) and the Rowe-type consolidation cell.

Highway Material Testing Laboratory

This laboratory is well-equipped with various testing machines and equipment for studying the performance of different types of highway materials such as asphalt cement, emulsified asphalt, asphaltic concrete and aggregates.

Full-Scale Testing Laboratory

This laboratory comprises a 12 m x 25 m test floor and a 6.4 m x 7.0 m reaction wall. It is equipped with a 300-ton and two 150-ton actuators together with a high precision system for conducting static, dynamic or pseudo-dynamic tests. This facility greatly enhances the potential for testing large and full-scale structural components such as bridge girders or a whole story of a building frame.

Wind Tunnel Laboratory

The laboratory consists of a wind tunnel equipped with a 2.24-meter diameter fan and a 30-kW D.D. motor. The wind velocity is 0-15 m/s, and the test section is 9.7 m long with a cross section 1.6 m x 1.6 m.

Information Technology and Construction Multimedia Laboratory

This laboratory is well equipped with hardware and software for the development of information technology and multimedia for construction to enhance the ability in self-learning and improvement of construction operations.

Transportation Research Laboratory

Transportation Research laboratory (TRL) is the university-supported research unit under the Ratchadapisek Research Fund, with annual endowment of 1 million baht. The mission focuses on advancing the excellence in transportation research and strengthening the multi-disciplinary academic activities in the field of transportation. The traffic laboratory possesses various equipment for traffic studies, both conventional and state-of-the-art instruments. Various traffic software packages are available on number of PCs, including simulation and traffic analysis programs. Transportation planning packages is used as a tool for study and research.

Computer Facilities

Chulalongkorn University has provided and supported computing environment with many unique aspects. Computing ranges from personal computers to workstations. Students can access to a variety of these computing facilities, including those operated by the Civil Engineering Department, the Engineering Computer Center (ECC), etc. Most of these machines are connected together in a vast network known as the Chulalongkorn University Network (CHULANET). Engineering Computer Center (ECC) provides and supports computer services and related facilities which concentrate on engineering applications for education, research and development in various engineering disciplines. The facilities at ECC include various models and sizes of SUN Sparc Server 1000, HP 9000, IBM RISC 6000 workstations, and 180 microcomputers. All are connected to the engineering Network (ENGINET), which is linked to the CHULANET. The networking enables users to access to the facilities from anywhere and to link to many other networks around the world. The department computing facilities are transitions. The department is setting a new computer laboratory to provide services to faculty and students in the department. The department has access to other networks through the Civil Engineering Network (CENET). Currently, a large number of personal computers are being distributed in the department for use by faculty and graduate students.

Department of Civil Engineering Library

The Department of Civil Engineering Library is currently located on the second floor of Building 1, Faculty of Engineering. The library is aimed at serving faculty members, staffs and students of the department of Civil Engineering as the center for academic and research resources and the hub for accessing research databases. At present, CE Library maintains various collections of academic resources, e.g., dissertation, theses, research reports, journals, periodicals, multimedia CDs, etc. The library is generally opened 8 a.m. – 5 p.m., Monday to Friday, except public holidays.
