The history of civil engineering education in Thailand was dated back to 1913 at the Yantara Suksa School within the Civil Service School, which later became the Faculty of Engineering of Chulalongkorn University in 1916. In 1929, the Faculty of Engineering was officially separated into three engineering departments - Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, and Mechanical Engineering, from which the first Bachelor's degree was awarded in 1935. The greatest responsibility of the faculty members at that time was to produce the highest quality graduates to serve the society in various public and private sectors. The role of the Department of Civil Engineering as the leading academic institution was continuously challenged, first upon the initiation of the Master of Engineering program in 1961 and recently in 2002 as the international program for the Doctor of Philosophy degree was established. Today, the Department of Civil Engineering is ranked by the professional society as one of the top programs in Thailand and attracts the best students and faculty. The department currently employs over 30 full-time faculty members, many of whom hold positions of influence and responsibility in national engineering organizations and serve on advisory councils for governmental agencies. The faculty members are specialized in their fields in construction engineering and management, geotechnical engineering, structural engineering, and transportation engineering. The department is equipped with one of the most advanced research facilities in South East Asia. The admissions to the department account for approximately 80 undergraduate students and 60 graduate students per year. Our students are recognized nationwide for their high academic achievement as well as their extracurricular activities which constitutes to one of the greatest strengths of the department. The Department of Civil Engineering aims at paving a forward-looking research direction in civil engineering related areas and producing optimal proportions of civil engineering graduates in the undergraduate and graduate levels who will contribute to the development and prosperity of the nation.
