About Civil Engineering Department, Chulalongkorn University

In the broad sense, the "civil engineering" discipline has been around for thousands of years unrecognized under the blanket of names like carpenters, masons, master builders, architects and so on. Even the name "engineer" itself has been recognized for only around three hundred years ago. Low profiled as the profession may be, the significance of the achievement of civil engineering profession has been universally celebrated and even envied by other professions.

As it is recognized that the synonymity of "civil" and "civilize" is not accidental, the civil engineering communities are proud of the contribution they do for societies. The nonexistence of roads, ports, water supply and distribution, dams, transportation systems and so on, would take our world back at least two millenniums!

The Department of Civil Engineering, Chulalongkorn University has been with the university since it was first established. The continuation of tradition of excellence has been devotedly maintained and passed along, generation by generation, through the administrative structure and mechanism of the engineering faculty.

The reputation of the Department of Civil Engineering accumulated through the long years in history provides an inspiration for the younger staff in the computer age to continue constructing an even stronger foundation for building our future society.

Construction Engineering and Management

A study in Construction Engineering and Management focuses on the management of total construction operations. The emphasis is also placed on interdisciplinary studies and research via a group of core courses in the Department of Civil Engineering and others selected from the field of management and technical engineering. The study areas are project management, planning and control, the utilization of construction methods and equipment, modern techniques for decision-making in construction, quality and safety assurance for construction work as well as construction specification and legal aspects. The study also covers Computer-Aided Construction utilizing state-of-the-art computing facilities. Being situated in Bangkok, a regional center town of South East Asia, the program enjoys continuing association with national and international construction organizations. Activities in support of the construction industry include continuing education programs, cooperative work, and research/development.

Geotechnical Engineering

The Division of Geotechnical Engineering at Chulalongkorn University is the place where soil mechanics and foundation engineering was first taught in Thailand. There are currently seven faculty members; one associated professors, five assistant professors and one lecturer involve in teaching undergraduate and graduate levels.

The division engages in many fields in geotechnical engineering. Research activities involve in the area of soil and rock research, especially Bangkok soft clay. Several laboratories have been established to support both fundamental tests for practical usage and advanced tests for advanced research and development purposes.

Structural Engineering

It is the aim of the Division of Structural Engineering to produce high quality graduates with the strong background in advanced technology who will efficiently contribute to the sustainable development of the region. The graduates are trained to have research ability, in addition to firm fundamentals as well as advances in structural engineering. to build up self reliance in technology for their countries as well as to cope with the dynamic of the changing environment.

With the division manned by qualified faculty members with specialization in deverse areas, the Division of Structural Engineering is engaged in teaching and research in the following areas :

  • Modern analysis and design of structures including high-rise buildings and long span structures
  • Building technology and construction materials
  • Earthquake engineering and vibration
  • Finite element analysis of structures
  • Full scale structure testing
  • Fire safety

Transportation Engineering

Graduate study in Transportation Engineering is designed for prospective persons preparing for careers in either professional practice or research and education. It emphasizes on the comprehensive insights to the theories as well as the implementation in practice to serve the demand for appropriate solutions for transportation problems and the development of transportation systems.

The study covers a wide spectrum of transportation engineering matters, from planning to operation and management of all means of transport. The course provides the understanding of the movements of people and goods, the knowledge of techniques for analyzing transportation problems and for approaching the solutions, the ability to perform planning and design of highway components, and the methods to manage the transportation systems.
